Their European campaign required an unusually long route: Milan entered through qualifying before progressing through the group stage and ultimately reaching the knockout rounds. The knockout stages produced several memorable performances. Milan overcame Celtic in the Round of 16 and then eliminated Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals.

Kaká did not score in the final, but his influence remained decisive. UEFA's season report notes that he won the free-kick that produced Milan’s opening goal before creating the opportunity for Inzaghi's second.
Captain Paolo Maldini then lifted the trophy in Athens, adding another extraordinary European title to a Milan career stretching back to the 1980s.
