The Vélez Sarsfield 1997–98 Home Retro Football Jersey celebrates another unforgettable achievement in the history of the Argentine club. Under manager Marcelo Bielsa, Vélez captured the 1998 Torneo Clausura championship, completing an outstanding campaign with 14 victories, four draws and just one defeat. The title marked the club's fifth Argentine league championship and continued a remarkable period of success that had already included the Copa Libertadores and Intercontinental Cup earlier in the decade.

The championship-winning squad featured legendary goalkeeper José Luis Chilavert, alongside influential players such as Patricio Camps, Martín Posse, Christian Bassedas, Mauricio Pellegrino, Carlos Cordone and Claudio Husaín. Camps led the team's attack with 18 goals during the Clausura, while Posse scored the decisive goal against Huracán that secured the championship. Chilavert's leadership and memorable goalscoring ability added another distinctive dimension to one of Vélez's most successful generations.

The home jersey celebrates Vélez Sarsfield's unmistakable white-and-blue club identity, traditionally characterised by a white base and the famous blue V-shaped design across the chest. Its classic late-1990s styling reflects the heritage of the club and the atmosphere of Estadio José Amalfitani during a celebrated championship-winning era. Closely associated with Marcelo Bielsa's innovative tactical approach and the outstanding performances of a talented squad, the Vélez Sarsfield 1997–98 Home Retro Football Jersey is a meaningful tribute to one of the club's greatest seasons.

  • Rec. Player Printing Options

During the late 1990s, Argentine football commonly featured traditional matchday numbering, and name printing was not always consistent across competitions. Number-only printing is the safest historically appropriate presentation unless a specific match-worn shirt confirms the player name and number.

Best Printing Choice: 1 — JOSÉ LUIS CHILAVERT

Other Strong Options: PATRICIO CAMPS / MARTÍN POSSE / CHRISTIAN BASSEDAS / MAURICIO PELLEGRINO / CARLOS CORDONE

    Recommendation

    1 — JOSÉ LUIS CHILAVERT

The most iconic player associated with Vélez Sarsfield's golden era. The Paraguayan goalkeeper captained the team through an outstanding period and scored a memorable late penalty against Boca Juniors during the 1998 Clausura campaign.

    PATRICIO CAMPS — Match Number

The strongest outfield choice for the championship-winning season. Camps scored 18 goals in the 1998 Clausura and was one of the most important attacking players in Marcelo Bielsa's title-winning team.

    MARTÍN POSSE — Match Number

An outstanding historical selection. Posse scored the decisive goal against Huracán on 31 May 1998, securing the Clausura championship for Vélez Sarsfield.

    CHRISTIAN BASSEDAS — Match Number

A classic midfield choice. Bassedas was one of the club's most influential players during the 1990s, providing creativity, tactical intelligence and experience.

    MAURICIO PELLEGRINO — Match Number

An excellent defensive option. Pellegrino was an established central defender and a key member of the championship-winning squad.

    CARLOS CORDONE — Match Number

A distinctive attacking alternative. Cordone contributed important goals and attacking movement during Vélez's successful 1998 Clausura campaign.

Match Number indicates that an exact player-number combination should be verified against a period team sheet or match photograph before printing.

    • Historical Significance: Vélez Sarsfield's 1998 Clausura Championship Under Marcelo Bielsa

The 1997–98 season marked another outstanding chapter in Vélez Sarsfield's golden era, as the Buenos Aires club captured the 1998 Torneo Clausura title under the management of Marcelo Bielsa.

Following an extraordinary period of domestic and international success under Carlos Bianchi and Osvaldo Piazza, Vélez entered a new phase with Bielsa introducing an intense, attacking tactical philosophy. The result was another Argentine league championship, reinforcing the club's position among South America's leading teams.

1997 Torneo Apertura — A Period of Transition

Vélez began the 1997–98 season following several years of remarkable success, including the 1994 Copa Libertadores, 1994 Intercontinental Cup and multiple Argentine league championships.

The team finished fifth in the 1997 Apertura, remaining competitive while undergoing changes in its coaching staff and playing structure.

The squad retained experienced championship-winning players such as José Luis Chilavert, Mauricio Pellegrino, Christian Bassedas, Raúl Cardozo and Flavio Zandoná, alongside emerging attacking talents.

This combination of experience and youth provided the foundation for the club's impressive Clausura campaign.

    1998 Torneo Clausura — Champions

Under Marcelo Bielsa, Vélez Sarsfield produced an exceptional 1998 Clausura campaign, finishing with 14 victories, four draws and just one defeat.

Bielsa introduced a demanding, high-intensity playing style built around aggressive pressing, quick transitions and coordinated attacking movement.

The team began the tournament with a 2–0 victory over Racing Club and followed it with several impressive performances, including a 3–2 away victory against Boca Juniors at La Bombonera.

One of the most memorable moments of that match came when goalkeeper José Luis Chilavert scored a late penalty, securing a dramatic victory over Boca.

Vélez's attacking success was driven by Patricio Camps, who scored 18 goals in the Clausura, supported by Martín Posse, Carlos Cordone and Darío Husaín.

On 31 May 1998, Vélez secured the Clausura championship with a 1–0 victory over Huracán, thanks to a goal from Martín Posse.

The title became Vélez's fifth Argentine league championship and the club's final domestic league triumph of the 1990s.

José Luis Chilavert — The Iconic Goalkeeper

Paraguayan goalkeeper José Luis Chilavert remained one of Vélez Sarsfield's most recognisable players during the campaign.

Renowned for his commanding goalkeeping, leadership and extraordinary ability to score from free kicks and penalties, Chilavert had already become an international football icon.

His dramatic penalty against Boca Juniors was one of the memorable moments of the Clausura-winning season.

Together with the attacking performances of Camps, Posse and Cordone, Chilavert's leadership helped define the successful 1997–98 team.

The 1997–98 home jersey therefore represents one of the most important achievements of Marcelo Bielsa's early managerial career and another championship-winning chapter in Vélez Sarsfield's remarkable 1990s history.
