Vélez completed an unbeaten Supercopa campaign by defeating Cruzeiro 3–0 on aggregate in the final, with José Luis Chilavert scoring the only goal of the first leg and Patricio Camps opening the scoring in the 2–0 return victory. The following April, Vélez added the Recopa Sudamericana after a 1–1 draw with River Plate in Kobe, with Chilavert scoring during the match and making two saves in the penalty shoot-out before Mauricio Pellegrino converted the decisive kick.
