Managed by Kevin Keegan, Newcastle finished 2nd in the Premier League, producing their highest Premier League finish at that point and becoming famous nationally as “The Entertainers” for their attacking style.
Newcastle led the Premier League for a substantial part of the campaign and at one stage held a commanding advantage at the top of the table. The title race eventually swung towards Manchester United during the second half of the season, with Newcastle ultimately finishing runners-up. Despite missing out on the championship, the attacking football and personalities of the 1995/96 team made it one of the most celebrated Newcastle sides of the Premier League era.
Les Ferdinand was the outstanding goalscorer. In his first season at Newcastle, he scored 25 Premier League goals and 29 goals in all competitions, finishing as the club’s leading scorer. He made 44 appearances across all competitions and became the focal point of Keegan’s attack.
Behind Ferdinand was an exceptional attacking group. Peter Beardsley scored 11 goals in all competitions, while midfielder Rob Lee contributed nine. Summer signing David Ginola brought creativity and flair from the left, making 40 appearances and scoring five times. Keith Gillespie provided width on the opposite side, while Colombian forward Faustino Asprilla arrived midway through the season and added another unpredictable attacking dimension.
The season’s established squad numbering included FERDINAND 9, LEE 7, BEARDSLEY 8 and GINOLA 14. Ginola’s No.14 is particularly worth noting because some contemporary tactical records list him positionally as No.10 in individual line-ups, but his registered squad number for the season was 14.
The away shirt itself has become closely identified with this specific campaign. Newcastle’s own history highlights the maroon-and-navy hoops as a classic 1995/96 away design, while surviving kit records confirm that it was a single-season away shirt, unlike the famous home design that continued into 1996/97.
