After overcoming Swedish champions IFK Göteborg in qualifying, Legia became the first Polish club to compete in the Champions League group stage under the competition’s modern format.
Their group-stage campaign began spectacularly. On 13 September 1995, Legia defeated Rosenborg 3–1 in Warsaw in their Champions League debut. Captain Leszek Pisz scored twice, with Ryszard Staniek adding the other goal.
Legia progressed from a group containing Spartak Moscow, Rosenborg and Blackburn Rovers, reaching the quarter-finals. Their European journey eventually ended against Panathinaikos, who won the second leg 3–0 in Athens after the first match in Warsaw had finished goalless.
The team was led by coach Paweł Janas and featured several important Polish internationals.
