The PSV Eindhoven 1995-96 Away Retro Football Shirt recreates one of the club’s most distinctive mid-1990s designs, worn during the final PSV season of the young Ronaldo Nazário and a campaign that ended with the club lifting the KNVB Cup.
The shirt features a striking purple base with black vertical stripes, with subtle repeated PSV lettering worked into the striped pattern. A contrasting white collar with black-and-white detailing completes a design that is instantly recognisable as a product of mid-1990s European football. Period kit records identify purple, black and white as the principal colours of PSV’s 1995/96 Away design.
This shirt belongs to an excellent PSV generation featuring Ronaldo, Luc Nilis, Phillip Cocu, Wim Jonk, Arthur Numan and Boudewijn Zenden, with several other young players beginning careers that would later take them to the highest level of European football.
For collectors, the strongest association is undoubtedly RONALDO 9. The Brazilian was still only 19 during the season and was completing his two-year spell in Eindhoven before moving to Barcelona in the summer of 1996.

Historical Significance: Ronaldo’s final season with PSVThe 1995/96 season was an important transitional campaign for PSV Eindhoven. Dick Advocaat’s team challenged strongly in the Eredivisie, eventually finishing second behind Ajax, while finding success in the domestic cup and reaching the latter stages of European competition.
The attack contained the remarkable combination of Luc Nilis and Ronaldo. Nilis was PSV’s leading league scorer with 21 Eredivisie goals, while Ronaldo scored 12 times in only 13 league appearances, demonstrating the extraordinary scoring rate that had already made the Brazilian one of Europe’s most exciting young forwards.
Ronaldo's appearances were limited by knee problems during the campaign, but when available he remained devastating. His 1995/96 season ultimately brought his PSV career to an end after two prolific years in Eindhoven.
The squad also featured Phillip Cocu, who produced an excellent season from midfield with 12 league goals in 29 appearances, while emerging winger Boudewijn Zenden contributed seven goals. Wim Jonk provided experience and quality in central midfield, and Arthur Numan was an important figure in defence.
UEFA Cup Run
PSV also enjoyed a strong 1995/96 UEFA Cup campaign.
One notable tie came against Leeds United in the second round. Surviving lineup records from the second leg show Ronaldo wearing No.9, Luc Nilis No.10 and Phillip Cocu No.11, providing useful evidence for period-accurate player printing.
PSV eventually reached the UEFA Cup quarter-finals, where they faced Barcelona. The first leg at Camp Nou ended in a draw before PSV were eliminated following the return match in Eindhoven. The run nevertheless represented a strong European campaign alongside the club’s domestic cup success.
KNVB Cup Winners
The season ended with silverware.
PSV reached the KNVB Cup Final against Sparta Rotterdam on 16 May 1996. The match developed into a seven-goal contest, with PSV ultimately winning 5–2.
PSV’s own historical record credits the goals to Phillip Cocu, Marciano Vink, Wim Jonk and Björn van der Doelen, together with an own goal by John Veldman.
The victory secured PSV’s seventh KNVB Cup, ensuring that the 1995/96 generation finished the campaign with a major domestic trophy despite missing out on the Eredivisie championship.
For Ronaldo, it was the conclusion of his PSV chapter. He left Eindhoven in the summer of 1996, but his extraordinary goalscoring performances during his two seasons in the Netherlands had already established him as one of world football’s outstanding young talents.
Rec. Player Printing Options
Printing Recommendation RONALDO 9 The standout collector’s choice. Ronaldo wore No.9 in documented 1995/96 matches and scored 12 league goals from only 13 appearances during his final PSV season. NILIS 10 The strongest season-performance alternative. Luc Nilis was PSV’s leading Eredivisie scorer with 21 goals and is repeatedly documented wearing No.10. COCU 11 An excellent choice from a breakthrough period in Phillip Cocu’s career. He scored 12 league goals from midfield and is documented wearing No.11 in several major 1995/96 fixtures. JONK 8 A classic midfield option. Wim Jonk was one of PSV’s most experienced central players and wore No.8 in documented lineups during the season. NUMAN 5 The captaincy choice. Arthur Numan was an important leader in the side and is documented wearing No.5 in major Eredivisie and UEFA Cup matches. VINK 7 A distinctive 1995/96 option. Marciano Vink regularly appeared in midfield and scored in PSV’s 5–2 KNVB Cup Final victory over Sparta. ZENDEN 14 An excellent young-player option. Boudewijn Zenden was emerging into PSV’s senior team and scored seven league goals, although his number varied and should be matched to a specific fixture for strict accuracy. EIJKELKAMP 9 A strong alternative centre-forward choice. René Eijkelkamp scored nine league goals and wore No.9 when starting in place of Ronaldo in documented European matches. RONALDO 9 is the defining printing for the PSV Eindhoven 1995-96 Away Retro Football Shirt.
Ronaldo scored 12 Eredivisie goals from just 13 appearances during the campaign, despite injuries significantly reducing his playing time. More importantly for shirt accuracy, surviving match records document him wearing No.9, including PSV’s UEFA Cup second-leg meeting with Leeds United and the Eredivisie match against Ajax in November 1995.
The 1995/96 shirt also represents Ronaldo’s final season at PSV, giving RONALDO 9 a particularly strong historical connection to this exact design.
For a player more representative of the complete season, NILIS 10 is the strongest alternative. Nilis played 31 league matches and scored 21 goals, finishing as PSV’s leading Eredivisie scorer.
