In the 1980 Copa Libertadores Final, Nacional faced Brazilian powerhouse Internacional. After a 0–0 first leg in Porto Alegre, Nacional won the return match 1–0 at the Estadio Centenario on 6 August 1980. Waldemar Victorino scored the decisive goal, giving Nacional their second Copa Libertadores title.
The triumph earned Nacional a meeting with European champions Nottingham Forest in the Intercontinental Cup. Played in Tokyo on 11 February 1981, Nacional again won 1–0, and once again the scorer was Victorino. The victory made Nacional world champions for the second time and the first winner of the Intercontinental Cup under its new single-match format in Japan.
Nacional’s own historical shirt archive specifically records the 1981 home design as the shirt first worn officially against Nottingham Forest in that world-title victory, making shirts from this 1980–82 period particularly significant to collectors.
