The West Ham United 1976–80 Home Retro Football Jersey celebrates a remarkable chapter in the Hammers' history, spanning four seasons under manager John Lyall. During this period, West Ham experienced First Division football, relegation to the Second Division and an eventual return to national prominence through their unforgettable 1980 FA Cup victory. The club's resilience and commitment to attacking football made this era an important part of its identity.

The shirt is associated with legendary West Ham players including Billy Bonds, Trevor Brooking, Frank Lampard Sr., Alan Devonshire and Alvin Martin. The defining moment came on 10 May 1980, when Brooking scored the winning goal against Arsenal at Wembley to secure a famous 1–0 victory. Captained by Bonds, West Ham became the last team from outside England's top division to win the men's FA Cup. The jersey's traditional number-only presentation reflects the football shirt conventions of the period, with a prominent white number 16 displayed on the back.

The jersey features a distinctive two-tone claret and sky-blue design, with a claret lower body and a sky-blue upper chest and sleeves. Three claret V-shaped stripes extend across the front, creating a striking chevron pattern, while the traditional crossed-hammers club crest sits inside a circular claret badge. The shirt is finished with a sky-blue fold-over collar featuring claret stripes, a contrasting V-shaped neckline and matching striped sleeve cuffs. The back retains a predominantly claret finish with sky-blue sleeves and a large white number 16, capturing the unmistakable character of West Ham United's late-1970s football heritage.

  • Season Information

The West Ham United 1976–80 Home Jersey represents a fascinating four-year period in the club's history, encompassing First Division football, relegation, a rebuilding phase in the Second Division and one of English football's most memorable FA Cup victories.

1976–77 Season — First Division Survival

Under manager John Lyall, West Ham finished 17th in the First Division, maintaining their top-flight status. The squad featured established players including Billy Bonds, Trevor Brooking, Frank Lampard Sr., Alan Devonshire and Bryan Robson.

Having reached the European Cup Winners' Cup final the previous season, West Ham returned to European competition but were eliminated in the second round by Dinamo Tbilisi.

    1977–78 Season — Relegation

West Ham endured a difficult league campaign and finished 20th in the First Division, resulting in relegation to the Second Division.

Despite the setback, the club retained important members of its squad, including captain Billy Bonds and influential midfielder Trevor Brooking, who would become central to its subsequent recovery.

1978–79 Season — Rebuilding in the Second Division

In their first season outside the top flight, West Ham finished fifth in the Second Division, missing out on promotion.

John Lyall continued developing a competitive squad built around experienced players and emerging talent. The team's attacking football and commitment to its established playing philosophy helped lay the foundations for future success.

1979–80 Season — FA Cup Champions

The most celebrated achievement of this period came in 1980, when West Ham won the FA Cup despite competing in the Second Division.

After defeating Aston Villa in the quarter-finals and Everton in a semi-final replay, West Ham faced Arsenal at Wembley on 10 May 1980.

Trevor Brooking scored the only goal in a 1–0 victory, securing West Ham's third FA Cup title. Captain Billy Bonds lifted the trophy, while players such as Alan Devonshire, Ray Stewart, Alvin Martin and Phil Parkes played important roles in the historic campaign.

West Ham became the last club from outside England's top division to win the men's FA Cup, a distinction that remains associated with the 1980 triumph.

The 1976–80 home shirt captures this memorable era, combining West Ham's traditional claret-and-blue identity with a distinctive late-1970s design.

  • Rec. Player Printing Options

During the late 1970s, English football shirts generally featured large numbers without player names. Squad numbers were assigned according to matchday selections rather than permanent season-long registrations.

The uploaded jersey already features a large white number 16, making the existing number-only presentation particularly appropriate for the period. Number 16 should be treated as a substitute's shirt number rather than attributed to one specific player across all four seasons.

Best Printing Choice: 16 (Original Shirt Printing)

Other Strong Options: 4 (Billy Bonds) / 10 (Trevor Brooking) / 3 (Frank Lampard Sr.) / 11 (Alan Devonshire) / 5 (Alvin Martin)

    Printing

    Recommendation

    16 (Original Shirt Printing)

The recommended choice for this particular jersey. Retaining the existing white number 16 preserves its vintage matchday-substitute appearance without incorrectly assigning it to a specific player.

    4 (Billy Bonds)

A classic West Ham captain's choice. Bonds was the club's inspirational leader throughout this period and captained the Hammers to their historic 1980 FA Cup victory.

    10 (Trevor Brooking)

The most iconic player tribute from the era. Brooking scored the winning goal against Arsenal in the 1980 FA Cup Final and remains one of West Ham's most celebrated footballers.

    3 (Frank Lampard Sr.)

An excellent traditional choice. Lampard was a dependable left-back, a long-serving West Ham player and an important member of the 1980 FA Cup-winning side.

    11 (Alan Devonshire)

A memorable attacking choice. Devonshire's dribbling, creativity and wing play were instrumental in West Ham's 1980 FA Cup success.

    5 (Alvin Martin)

A strong defensive alternative. Martin emerged as a key central defender during the late 1970s and played an important role in the club's FA Cup triumph.

The alternative numbers reflect period-associated playing positions and shirt choices; individual match lineups could vary.
