Drawn into Group E alongside West Germany, Denmark and Scotland, La Celeste progressed from the group stage before facing eventual champions Argentina in the Round of 16. Uruguay were eliminated following a 1–0 defeat.
The team was coached by Omar Borrás and featured several notable players of the era, including Enzo Francescoli, Antonio Alzamendi, Jorge Barrios, Jorge da Silva and Rubén Paz. Francescoli started all four of Uruguay’s matches and scored against Denmark, while Alzamendi scored against West Germany; they were Uruguay’s only two goalscorers at the tournament.
