The squad had been strengthened by several arrivals, most notably Pavel Nedvěd, who joined from Sparta Prague following his performances for the Czech Republic at Euro 96. Lazio’s historical museum also identifies Igor Protti and Guerino Gottardi among the significant additions.
Results were inconsistent during the first half of the season and Zeman eventually left in January 1997. Dino Zoff returned to the bench, reorganising the side and producing a significant improvement during the second half of the campaign. Lazio recovered sufficiently to finish fourth in Serie A with 55 points, securing UEFA Cup qualification for the following season.
One of the season’s standout home performances came on 5 January 1997, when Lazio defeated reigning Italian champions AC Milan 3–0 at the Stadio Olimpico. Giuseppe Signori opened the scoring, Pierluigi Casiraghi added the second and Alessandro Grandoni completed the victory. The Lazio Museum specifically documents a Signori match-worn example of this home shirt from that match.
Giuseppe Signori remained Lazio’s principal attacking figure. Wearing his established No.11, he finished as the club’s leading scorer with 15 goals across the season. His continued importance made him the major link between the emerging late-1990s Lazio side and the free-scoring teams of the preceding Zeman years.
The campaign was also highly significant for Pavel Nedvěd. Wearing No.18, the Czech midfielder was beginning what would become a hugely successful five-season spell in Rome. His first Lazio campaign included important Serie A goals, and he would subsequently develop into one of the central figures of the side that won the Coppa Italia, UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, UEFA Super Cup and eventually the Serie A title. His No.18 assignment for 1996/97 is confirmed in contemporary squad records.
Meanwhile, Alessandro Nesta, still only 20 during the campaign, was establishing himself as a regular first-team defender. Wearing No.13, the academy graduate was moving rapidly toward the leadership role that would eventually see him captain Lazio during the club’s most successful period.
In Europe, Lazio defeated Lens 2–1 on aggregate in the UEFA Cup first round. Their run ended dramatically against Tenerife in the second round: Lazio won the home leg 1–0 but lost 5–3 in the Canary Islands, going out 5–4 on aggregate.
The 1996/97 season is therefore best viewed as a bridge between two Lazio eras. Signori remained the established star, while Nesta was maturing and Nedvěd had just arrived.
