The Flamengo 1998 Goalkeeper L/S Retro Football Shirt recreates one of the club’s most striking goalkeeper designs from the late 1990s, worn during a season in which Clemer was Flamengo’s established first-choice goalkeeper. Kit archives identify this exact design as Flamengo’s 1998 goalkeeper shirt, associated with the Campeonato Brasileiro campaign.

The shirt uses a predominantly dark navy/black base rather than Flamengo’s traditional red-and-black outfield colours. Its standout feature is the highly expressive all-over graphic: vivid yellow and deep pink/red geometric blocks, diagonal flashes, pixel-style patterns and oversized club-inspired artwork extend across the body and long sleeves.

A traditional fold-over collar with yellow striping reinforces the unmistakable late-1990s aesthetic. The asymmetrical graphics continue across both sleeves, while the back is comparatively restrained through the upper body before large pink geometric bars appear toward the lower section.

This is a particularly strong example of the experimental goalkeeper-shirt design language of the 1990s — oversized graphics, contrasting fluorescent colours and a loose long-sleeve silhouette — while remaining immediately connected to Flamengo through its crest and red-black visual references.

Flamengo’s 1998 season featured a squad containing several major names in Brazilian football, including Romário, Júnior Baiano, Juan, Marcos Assunção, Beto and Rodrigo Fabri. In goal, however, the position was overwhelmingly associated with Clemer, who had joined Flamengo the previous year and established himself as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.

Contemporary match records repeatedly list Clemer as Flamengo’s starting goalkeeper throughout the year. He started matches in the Campeonato Carioca and remained the regular goalkeeper during the Campeonato Brasileiro and Copa Mercosur campaigns.

The Campeonato Brasileiro campaign proved inconsistent. Flamengo finished 11th in the first phase, narrowly outside the eight-team knockout stage. Results included a 3–1 away victory over Coritiba, a 3–2 win against Atlético Mineiro and draws against Vasco and São Paulo, but the team lacked the consistency required to progress.

Flamengo also participated in the inaugural Copa Mercosur. Clemer again appeared in goal, including the 2–0 victory over Vélez Sarsfield at the Maracanã. Flamengo did not progress beyond the group stage, but the competition formed another part of the club’s busy 1998 calendar.

The other particularly interesting goalkeeper in the squad was a very young Júlio César. He was still at the beginning of his professional career but was already included among Flamengo’s goalkeeping options. Squad records list Clemer as No.1 and Júlio César as No.12 for this period.

That makes this shirt interesting from two perspectives: it is primarily a Clemer-era Flamengo goalkeeper jersey, but it also belongs to the period when future Brazil international Júlio César was beginning his senior career at the club.

  • Rec. Player Printing Options

    Printing Recommendation
CLEMER 1 The definitive and historically strongest choice. Clemer was Flamengo’s established first-choice goalkeeper throughout 1998, and squad records confirm his No.1 shirt for the season.
JÚLIO CÉSAR 12 A fascinating alternative for collectors. Júlio César was still a teenage goalkeeper developing at Flamengo in 1998 and wore No.12, years before becoming the club’s first choice and a Brazil international.

CLEMER 1 is unquestionably the most representative printing for the Flamengo 1998 Goalkeeper L/S Retro Football Shirt.

Clemer was Flamengo’s regular starting goalkeeper throughout the season, appearing in goal across the Campeonato Carioca, Campeonato Brasileiro and Copa Mercosur. Historical squad-number records specifically list him as No.1 for Flamengo in 1998, while contemporary match records repeatedly confirm him as the starting goalkeeper.

JÚLIO CÉSAR 12 is the more unusual collector’s choice. He was only at the beginning of his senior career in 1998, but the No.12 assignment is documented for Flamengo’s squad.
