England progressed from a group containing Tunisia, Romania and Colombia. The red away shirt was worn in the decisive 2–0 victory over Colombia on 26 June 1998, with Darren Anderton and David Beckham scoring. Beckham’s goal was a memorable free kick and his first senior international goal for England.
England then faced Argentina in one of the tournament’s most famous matches. Michael Owen scored his celebrated individual goal in the 2–2 draw before England were eliminated on penalties. For that match England wore the white home shirt with the white shorts belonging to this away kit.
