The first season of this Away shirt was the memorable one. After finishing fourth in 1994/95, Fabio Capello rebuilt Milan's attack with the arrivals of Roberto Baggio and George Weah, adding them to an already experienced squad. Milan’s own historical archive describes Baggio and Weah, together with Savićević, as transforming the attacking options available to Capello.
Milan went on to win the 1995/96 Serie A title, their 15th Italian championship and Capello's fourth league title with the club in five seasons. The title was mathematically secured on 28 April 1996 with victory over Fiorentina.
The campaign is also historically important for shirt collectors because 1995/96 was the first Serie A season in which players wore personalised shirts featuring surnames and permanent squad numbers. The shirt continued into 1996/97, but Milan's fortunes changed dramatically.
Capello departed following the championship triumph and was replaced by Óscar Tabárez. Milan strengthened with players including Edgar Davids, Michael Reiziger, Christophe Dugarry and Pietro Vierchowod, while Roberto Donadoni left the club.
Tabárez did not complete the season, with Arrigo Sacchi returning to the bench. Milan eventually finished a disappointing 11th in Serie A, making 1996/97 one of the most difficult campaigns of the club's otherwise hugely successful 1990s era.
The season nevertheless gives this Away design additional historical importance because it was Franco Baresi's final campaign as a professional footballer. It therefore spans the last two seasons of one of the greatest careers in Milan history.
