    • Historical Significance: Bundesliga Title Defence and the Famous European Cup Encounter with Barcelona

The 1991–92 season was an important chapter in the history of 1. FC Kaiserslautern, as the club entered the campaign as defending Bundesliga champions following its remarkable 1990–91 title triumph.

Under manager Karl-Heinz Feldkamp, Kaiserslautern competed in an expanded 20-team Bundesliga following German reunification. The club ultimately finished fifth, remaining among Germany's leading teams despite being unable to retain its championship.

    Bundesliga — Defending the Championship

Kaiserslautern entered the season with considerable expectations after winning the Bundesliga in 1990–91.

The squad featured influential players including Stefan Kuntz, a prolific German striker, and Andreas Brehme, the 1990 World Cup-winning defender who had returned to the club. Other important contributors included Bruno Labbadia, Axel Roos, Martin Wagner and Miroslav Kadlec.

Although the team could not repeat its previous championship success, Kaiserslautern remained competitive and finished fifth in the expanded league.

European Cup — The Famous Barcelona Encounter

As German champions, Kaiserslautern qualified for the 1991–92 European Cup, where they faced Barcelona in the second round.

After losing the first leg 2–0 at Camp Nou, Kaiserslautern produced an extraordinary performance in the return match at the Betzenberg on 6 November 1991.

Two goals from Demir Hotić and a further goal from Bjarne Goldbæk gave Kaiserslautern a remarkable 3–0 lead, putting them on course for a famous European victory.

However, José Mari Bakero scored in stoppage time, reducing the deficit to 3–1 and allowing Barcelona to progress on away goals with the aggregate score level at 3–3.

Barcelona went on to win the European Cup that season, defeating Sampdoria in the final at Wembley.

Despite the heartbreaking elimination, Kaiserslautern's performance against Johan Cruyff's Barcelona remains one of the most memorable European nights in the club's history.

    DFB-Supercup — Trophy Success

Kaiserslautern also won the 1991 DFB-Supercup, defeating Werder Bremen 3–1 in July 1991.

The victory added another trophy to the club's successful early-1990s period and highlighted the quality of the squad that had secured the Bundesliga championship.

The 1991–92 home shirt is therefore closely associated with Kaiserslautern's title-defending season, its Supercup victory and its unforgettable European Cup encounter with Barcelona.

  • Rec. Player Printing Options

During the early 1990s, German football generally used traditional matchday shirt numbers rather than permanent squad numbers. Number-only printing is the most historically appropriate choice for this jersey.

Best Printing Choice: 9 (Stefan Kuntz)

    Other Strong Options: 10 (Demir Hotić) / 8 (Bjarne Goldbæk) / 6 (Thomas Dooley) / 5 (Miroslav Kadlec) / 7 (Marcel Witeczek)

    Printing

    Recommendation

    9 (Stefan Kuntz)

The strongest striker-inspired choice. Kuntz was Kaiserslautern's joint-leading Bundesliga scorer in 1991–92 with 11 goals and one of the defining players of the club's early-1990s success.

    10 (Demir Hotić)

An outstanding European Cup tribute. Hotić scored twice in the famous 3–1 home victory over Barcelona and contributed 10 Bundesliga goals during the campaign.

    8 (Bjarne Goldbæk)

A memorable midfield option. The Danish midfielder scored Kaiserslautern's third goal against Barcelona, briefly putting the German champions on course for a remarkable European Cup upset.

    6 (Thomas Dooley)

A distinctive defensive selection. Dooley was a member of the 1990–91 championship-winning squad and continued representing Kaiserslautern during its title-defending season.

    5 (Miroslav Kadlec)

A strong defensive heritage choice. The Czech international was an important member of Kaiserslautern's early-1990s squad and brought experience and composure to the back line.

    7 (Marcel Witeczek)

An alternative celebrating the club's attacking depth. Witeczek made 36 Bundesliga appearances and scored five league goals in 1991–92.

These are traditional position-based number suggestions, not confirmed player-number assignments for every match. Exact historical printing should be checked against a specific match lineup.
